Dating with Diabetes: Part 2 | What would I do if someone freaked out about my site?

Jun 21, 2023

Living with diabetes can be a challenging experience, and it can impact not just your own health but also your relationships with others. Dating can be particularly stressful for people with diabetes, as they may worry about how their condition will be perceived by their partners.

Let’s explore two common questions that people with diabetes might encounter in their dating lives.

The first question is… "What do I do if someone freaks out about my sites?"

Many people with diabetes use insulin injections or insulin pumps to manage their blood sugar levels, and these devices require insertion sites on the body. Some people may be uncomfortable with the sight of these sites and may express their discomfort. If someone is freaked out, or if you encounter this kind of reaction from a partner or potential partner, it's important to educate them about what the site is for and why it's necessary.  If they still don't like it, then they're welcome to move on.

The key takeaway here is that diabetes is a part of who you are, and anyone who cares about you should accept and support you, regardless of your condition.

The second question is…. "Do  partners get stressed when their partner with diabetes has low blood sugar?"

If you have a partner who is not familiar with diabetes, they may become stressed or panicked when you experience low blood sugar. The best way to handle this situation is to educate your partner on the signs and symptoms of low blood sugar and what they can do to help you. This might include giving you a sugary drink or snack, helping you test your blood sugar, or calling for emergency assistance if necessary

It's essential to remember that managing diabetes is a team effort, and having a partner who understands and supports you can make all the difference.

Living with diabetes can be challenging, but it's important to remember that you're not alone. There is a community of people with diabetes who understand what you're going through, and there are resources available to help you navigate your condition.

It's also important to be open and honest with your partners and loved ones about your condition, and to educate them on how they can support you. With the right mindset and support, living with diabetes can be a manageable and fulfilling experience.
