Dating with Diabetes: Part 1 | Should I bring up my Diabetes early or wait until they ask?

Jun 27, 2023

Part 1  of a 7-part series on dating and diabetes

Living with diabetes can be a challenging and overwhelming experience, but it doesn't have to be a barrier to finding love or starting a romantic relationship. Diabetes affects millions of people worldwide, and it's a common health condition that should never hold you back from pursuing your dreams, including finding love.

It’s common for people with diabetes to worry about what their date will make of their diabetes, questions may include:

How do I explain I have a lifelong condition?

Will he/she worry about my health in the long run?

Will he/she run a mile when I start to inject or they see my pump?

Many people with diabetes feel embarrassed or ashamed to bring up their condition, which can impact the dynamics of the relationship.

But it's important to have an open and honest conversation with your partner about your diabetes, so they understand your needs and how they can support you. This conversation should be early on in the relationship because it can help you determine whether your partner is supportive of your condition or not. Feeling uncomfortable or self-conscious about your condition is normal when you're with someone new, remember that you are doing something incredible to keep yourself alive

If your partner is supportive…

They will be understanding and compassionate about your condition.

They will learn about diabetes, recognize the signs of low blood sugar, help you maintain a healthy diet, and offer emotional support when needed.

They will be there for you every step of the way, and you won't have to worry about managing your condition alone.

On the other hand, if your partner is not supportive….

It's better to find out early on in the relationship. This can save you from investing time and energy in a relationship that may not be able to meet your needs. Having a partner who is understanding and supportive of your health condition is crucial for your well-being and can make all the difference in your life.

If your partner makes you feel bad about it, they're not worth your time. ABORT the date and move on to find someone who is understanding and compassionate about your condition.

Diabetes should never be a barrier to dating or relationships.

By being honest and upfront about your condition

 Educating your partner

 Discussing your needs

You can build a strong and supportive relationship. Prioritizing your health and taking care of yourself is crucial, and your partner will understand and support you every step of the way.

Overall, living with diabetes can be challenging, but it doesn't have to be a barrier to finding love or starting a romantic relationship. You can build a strong and supportive relationship that can make all the difference in your life.

Remember to prioritize your health and take care of yourself, and your partner will understand and support you every step of the way.
